When To Call Your Doctor When Your Child Has a Fever

When Should I Call My Doctor if My Child Has a Fever?

Fever itself will not harm your child and does not necessarily require treatment. But, you should call your pediatrician if:

  • Your child is under three (3) months of age and has a rectal temperature of 100.4 (38 degrees C) degrees or higher.
  • Your child is lethargic (the state or quality of dullness, prolonged sleepiness, sluggishness, or serious drowsiness) or irritable.
  • Fever has been present for longer than three (3) days.
  • Your child also has symptoms such as sore throat, ear pain, abdominal pain, or pain when urinating.
  • Your child is drinking less fluid than usual and has had a fewer than four (4) wet diapers in the past 24 hours or two (2) urinations during waking hours.
  • You are worried your child is less active than normal or is having trouble breathing, whether or not he/she has a fever.
